Open History Map wants to become the opensource “google maps” (and the Archaeological OpenStreetMap) for archeological information both from an academic and an educational point of view.

There are many fragmented online webgis experiences targeted at very specific projects, but no tool enables a more broad overview of both researches and studies. For these reasons, in order to create an Open Access platform, one of the most important aspects is the creation of tools that can facilitate both the sharing of archaeological spatial and temporal information as well as the easy reuse of the generated data. Open History Map targets the technological approach, creating a tool that is both a map of the archaeological world as well as a repository for the connected data within structured research papers. The project finds its roots first of all within the collective experience of “archaeology”, that refers to non-expert users, and in second place within the academic scientifical experience of research centers and universities. While the first approach gives an integrated and aware approach to the cultural item the second grants consistent and solid datasets with a perspective on the mashup of specific knowledges.

The project relies on collaboration and sharing of information and time. This conference is a good occasion to share with the archaeological community the tool and the technical aspects of the OHM project.

During the presentation we will display the import and digitalization of the data, the quality control and validation systems, the timeline for “vertical” movement and the data ontology.
